HIIT IT!

February is Heart Health Awareness Month. Did you know that…

1. Women’s Cardiovascular Risk is Underestimated

  • Fact: Cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death in women worldwide, yet many women and clinicians under-recognize it, often attributing symptoms to stress or aging.

  • Shocking element: Women are more likely than men to die suddenly from a heart attack and are less likely to receive timely interventions like angioplasty or bypass surgery.

  • Implication: Awareness alone could save tens of thousands of lives annually.

2. Age-related Risk: Older Women Are Especially Vulnerable

  • Fact: After menopause, women’s CVD risk rises sharply, and by age 65+, more women die from cardiovascular disease than from all cancers combined.

  • Shocking element: Unlike men, whose heart disease risk plateaus, older women experience a steep rise in both incidence and mortality.

  • Implication: Early and sustained preventive measures are crucial, especially in older women.

3. HIIT and Sports Can Dramatically Reduce Mortality

  • Fact: Studies show that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or regular sports like tennis in older women can reduce all-cause mortality by 30–40% compared to inactivity.

  • Shocking element: The intensity matters—moderate continuous exercise is beneficial, but HIIT improves cardiorespiratory fitness, insulin sensitivity, and vascular health more rapidly, directly lowering the risk of death from CVD and other causes.

  • Implication: Age is not a barrier—even women in their 70s–80s can safely do HIIT with supervision and see huge survival benefits.
