Student Profile: Bruce
Bruce Barnes is 89 years old and still cleans his own gutters.
Living in Ashland, Oregon, Bruce trains three days a week and says, without hesitation, that he plans to keep training...forever. For him, strength isn’t about looking fit or chasing youth. It’s about independence. It’s about being able to take care of his home, move confidently through the world, and live life on his own terms. A former engineer, Bruce brings focus and discipline to everything he does.
Later in life, he turned that same dedication toward art, becoming an accomplished sketch artist and the leader of a local sketching group that’s part of a worldwide artist community. He still travels internationally—regularly heading to Paris to sketch with fellow artists. Long days, uneven streets, stairs, and travel are all part of the experience, and Bruce trains so none of it becomes a limitation.
“The Strength & Balance classes are the reason I can still do everything I want—clean my gutters, travel, sketch in Paris, and move through my day with confidence,” Bruce says. “I truly feel capable at 89.” He credits consistent, intentional training that focuses on real-life movement: lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, and staying steady on his feet. Bruce isn’t trying to stay young. He’s training to stay capable. And he’s proof that strength can support a full, independent life at any age.
